‘The politicisation of the Care taker government and the judiciary is a hindrance to a free a fair election in Bangladesh . With a fake 1 crore voters list prepared & BNP cadre recruited as Police Officers, one can't expect non partisan election'.
Former Law Minister, Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru was speaking at a meeting of UK All Party Parliamentary Group on Bangladesh last Tuesday 10 Oct 2006 chaired by Baroness Uddin. He further stated, ‘No investigation has been made public of the various bomb attacks including the grenade on opposition leader Sheikh Hasina. No perpetrators have been brought to justice. Instead the Govt has given impunity to RAB for extra judiciary killings and offered lucrative jobs to the killers of Bangladesh 's founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman'.
Robert Templer, Director of Asia Programme, International Crisis Group also spoke at the meeting and gave a brief presentation of their latest report on Bangladesh to be published in the next two weeks. In his briefing as well as praising Bangladesh for having a vibrant civil society & press, extensive network of NGO's, GDP growth, longer record of democracy as compared to other Asian states but also pointed out as Bangladesh being a source of anxiety. He mentioned of the parliament not functioning properly, the rampant corruption, politicisation of judiciary, the deteoration of human rights including the persecution of Hindu, Ahmadiyya community and the plight of CHT people, Biharis, Rohingyas and RAB's extra judicial killings.
Followed by the presentation Harry Cohen MP, Jeremy Corbyn MP, Lord Avebury, Saida Muna Tasneem took pat in a small discussion. Others present were the US Embassy's 1 st Secretary, British Home Office official, representative of Simon Hughes MP, Enamur Rahman Chowdhury of Bangladesh High Commission, representative of International Bangladesh Foundation and Sally Keeble MP amongst others.
Whole on the same day another day long conference titled ‘Democracy & Human Rights in Bangladesh' was held in the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium organised by Dutch based civil society platform on Development Cooperation & Human Rights in Bangladesh (BOOM) and the International Committee for Democracy in Bangladesh (ICDB).
The conference chaired by Dr Peter Custers and attended by Robert Evans MEP, Nirj Deva MEP, J Nicholson MEP, Mr Leinen MEP, Mr Patrie MEP, Jeran Onacta MEP, Dr Charles Tannock MEP & Anna Beatriz from the European Commission and Rashed Khan Menon, Sultana Kamal and Abul Barakat from Bangladesh expressed their deep concern about the prevailing political situation in Bangladesh . They also discussed the importance of sending a delegation of European members (MEPs) to Bangladesh . The conference was also attended by Bangladeshi High Commissioner in Belgium , Mr Moniruzzaman and Bengali ex pats from various European countries.
