PRESS RELEASE
11 September 2007

Protest Against inclusion of Dr. N.C. Bhowmick, General Secretary Bangladesh Hindu
Bouddha Christan Oikya Parishad (BHBCOP), at the charge sheet of Dhaka University
cases and issuance of a warrant against him and also against other 2 minority Professors.

CAAMB (Campaign Against Atrocities On Minorities In Bangladesh), the human rights advocacy
group working on the issues of minority rights in Bangladesh, is worried at the news of inclusion
of Dr. N.C. Bhowmick, General Secretary Bangladesh Hindu Bouddha Christan Oikya Parishad
(BHBCOP) at the charge sheet of Dhaka University cases and issuance of a warrant against him.
It is known to all that the students of Dhaka University organized some protest demonstration
against the police torture in the university. CAAMB has earlier expressed its anxiety about the
new government which seems to be avoiding democratic process in the country and its lenience to
the islamist party of Jamat.
We were shocked to know that the government has chargesheeted Dr. N.C. Bhowmick, a
renowned professor of Dhaka University and the leader of the minority rights in Bnagladesh. It is
quite obvious that this charge sheet and subsequent issuance of warrant against him has been done
with a purpose which goes against the religious minorities in the country. It may be noted that
i. Professor Bhowmick was not present in the Dhaka University Teachers’ Union meeting
in which decision was made to support the students protest against plainclothes
soldiers’ brutal treatment of the students during a game.
ii. Professor Bhowmick did not join the rally that the Dhaka University professors brought
out the following day.
iii. Professor Bhowmick is no longer Jagannath Hall’s Provost and thus has no possibility of
having a direct contact with a large body of students.
iv. In his long career in minority rights movement (as General Secretary of BHBCOP)
never believed or preached violence as a means of regain equal rights for the country’s
Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.
v. It is also surprising that out of 10 accused professors, 3 is Hindu. However the caretaker
government has not cared to have any Hindu among its 10 Advisors.

CAAMB feels that the incident again highlights the failure of new caretaker government
to contain Islamic fundamentalism in the country and protection of the rights of
minorities.
CAAMB demands immediate withdrawal of all false charges against all the professors
including the charges against Professor Bhowmick and 2 minority professors of Rajshahi
University.

Thanking you
