17 JUNE - LONDON CONFERENCE CONDEMNS BANGLADESH’S ROLE
A one-day conference ‘European Human Rights Conference on Bangladesh: Extremism,
Intolerance and Violence’ to highlight the deteriorating human rights violation and to discuss
strategies to improve the human rights situation in Bangladesh was held at the University of
London on 17 June 2005 by Bangladesh Conference 2005 Steering Committee under Patrons
Lord Dholakia and Chair Lord Avebury. Important speakers included Justice K M Subhan,
Bangladesh, H E Mr A H Mofazzal Karim, High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Saber
Chowdhury, Organising Secretary, Bangladesh Awami League, Sitangshu Guha, BHBCUC,
Prof Meer Mobasher Ali, Deputy National Ameer, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community
Bangladesh, Abbas Faiz, Amnesty International and many others. Important resolutions
include calling upon the government of Bangladesh to repeal the 5 th and 8 th amendment of the
Constitution and the anti minority and racist laws such as the vested property legislation and
calling upon the government of Bangladesh to establish a permanent and independent
minority and women’s rights commission.
